Diary Entry

19/10/2010 – 21/10/2010
We began to plan out our ancillary tasks which were to create a magazine front cover and a film poster. We wrote down possible locations where we could take the pictures and discussed the possible locations before agreeing on a specific location: Warley Woods. We then arranged a date and time that we could meet up to go and take the pictures.

22/10/2010 – 25/10/2010
During this period of time, we took a number of different photographs and experimented with different angle shots. Once we had a selection of pictures, we sat down as a group and went through a selection process where we chose the best pictures for both the magazine front cover and the poster.

We identified the best possible pictures for the magazine front cover and the film poster and then began to experiment and create a number of draft designs in Adobe Photoshop. Over a period of 2 weeks, we used our research to create the two media products.

10/11/2010
Today we went to Warley woods to film with a video camera to try out different shots for the teaser trailer. After, watching the footage that we had recorded throughout the day, we came to decision that the lighting on the video camera was too dark. So we arranged to get a Hd camera to film our final teaser trailer.

17/11/2010
We started to film parts for our teaser trailer today using a HD camera in Warely Woods. We chose this location because we wanted to base it in a woodland area and there was also a set of swings in this creepy location. We used this location ro record many different scenes including the swing scenes and the 'girl running in the forest' scene. By using a HD camera, we were successfully able to record the clips in high quality and resolution. We told the actors before hand to wear the required clothing which relates to our horror genre. The clothing we used to create the hooded figure was a long black coat with a hood, black jeans and black shoes. The costume we used for the girl was simple to create a child like character. The clothing includes a simple brown jumper, leggings and trainers. The prop we used for the girl was a teddy bear to make her look innocent.

20/11/2010
Over a period of two months, we worked together as a group and arranged several different meetings whereby we went to our specified locations to film and recorded the rest of the footage for our trailer.

20/12/2010
By this time we had recorded all the footage that we had needed which gave us approximately 2 months to edit the clips using Final Cut Pro. Once we had edited our clips, we merged them togather to form the final trailer which we then uploaded onto our blogs. we merged them together using different types of tools such as video filters called colour corrector and video transitions called dip to colour dissolve and fades. We also used the cutting tool to trim clips, add music, text and change the speed of scenes to form the final trailer which we then uploaded onto our blogs.

Yes 1 No 0

3. What attracts you to see a film?

There are a number of factors that attract me to see a film-

The actors which are in the film
The reviews and ratings it has been given
The director
The genre
If there has been a proven track record of films produced by the director/actor

4. What type of audience do you think our media products are targeted at?

Aimed at people in their late teens and adults (i.e. 18+)

5. What genre/s do you think our media products are?

I feel that the project is a mixture of two genres- horror being one and thriller being the other.

6. Do you think the use of colour on our magazine front cover and film poster fits the genre? If so, how?

Yes it does the abstract font used for the title of the film on a greyscale picture creates a sense of mystery. The readers then starts to associate the subheading under the film name with the name of the magazine EMPIRE, the reader starts to assume that these colours are referring to the film as both black and red are linked with themes or death, mystery and violence.

7. Do you think the imagery is appropriate considering the genre and target audience? Why?

My personal opinion is yes because I think the films intended viewers are adults and those in their late teens; it is not intended for people under the age of 18 as the disturbing themes within the film may be a bit too much for the younger audience. Furthermore, I think the stereotype people have developed with genres of film they will be able to differentiate between the horror genre and a children’s genre; as if the image was a picture of cartoon you would automatically know that the film is intended for younger viewers. So therefore, the imagery shouldn’t be a problem.

8. Is the house style the same throughout our magazine front cover and film poster?

Yes the theme of the film is clearly linked through both types of media.

9. Is there anything we can do to improve our media products?

No, I think they have tried there very best and I can’t see any faults with the project.

10. Do you think our teaser trailer, magazine front cover and film poster fulfil their purposes?

Yes, as all three of them don’t give too much away. This creates curiosity within the viewer which in turn makes the viewer want to go and see the film.

11. Any other comments?

No

Media Studies - Film trailer final

Editing in Final Cut Pro

Below are some screenshots on how i edited some of my footage in Final Cut Pro. The first two transitions show how i inserted a video transition into my teaser trailer. I did this by clicking on the effects tab which then presented me with a drop down menu. I then clicked on ‘Dissolve’ and then chose ‘Fade in Fade Out’ dissolve.

I also wanted to wanted to add blackouts to my teaser trailer and i did this by placing my cursor on the part of the timeline where i wanted the black out to appear before clicking on the effects tab, video transitions. I then scrolled down to dissolve and clicked on cross dissolve.

Trailer Experimentation Clips - Girl on swing scene

Genre

How have you considered genre in creating your media text?
Once me and my group members had chosen and agreed on a film genre, we went about researching generic conventions that link to our chosen genre; horror. We analysed a number of horror film posters and identified certain principles that were displayed on the film posters such as the use of dark colours, most often black, white and red. We acknowledged that the use of such colours could relate to certain concepts such as death and/or blood.

On the ‘Let the right one in’ poster, we noticed that the main focal point was a mid shot of one of the characters face and this caught the viewers attention and thus, we too used a mid shot picture of one of the main characters on our own film poster.

On ‘The Blair Witch Project’ poster, we acknowledged the use of an inverted forest background and felt that such a background appealed to the target audience and so, we used this concept on our own film poster and used an inverted image of a forest as the background.

We analysed a number of magazine covers and realised that the main image used on the front cover was closely linked to the film. As our film is linked to a ‘death-eater’ figure, we used a close-up image of this on our front cover. The use of Black, Red and White on both the magazine front cover and on the film poster reinforced the horror genre and the horror genre was reinforced by the use of ‘eery’ and ‘creepy’ fonts.
n point the Genre?
My media products significantly pinpoint the genre horror and this is expressed through the use of horror generic conventions. The use of a black and white negative effect builds up a dark and scary atmosphere and by placing the person the person in the centre of the poster, we are able to instantly catch the viewers attention.

The costume of the main characters is quite simply a hood and black clothing. This allows the character to somewhat blend in within the background and doesn’t give too much away about the character itself. The fact that the hood is purposely covering the characters face leaves the audience in thought and this is most commonly done in horror films.

The close up of the face that is used on the magazine cover has been edited with a scratchy effect. The use of nails and tape manipulation expresses the explicit horror genre. We chose ‘"If you go down to the woods today, you're sure of a big surprise’ as our film catchphrase. This builds up enigma and suspense and the fact that the phrase is most commonly used in children’s nursery rhymes adds a rather eery twist. hy?

We have more or less concentrated solely on the conventions of the genre horror. We have however combined horror with the sub genre; Sci-fi. We did this as one of the films that we based our trailer on ‘The Blair Witch Project’ slightly combines horror with sci-fi. However, Horror is the main genre.

What signifies pinpoint the genre?
My media products pinpoint the horror genre as they follow the conventions of a horror film. For my poster, i have used a black and white negative main image as it creates a scary, dark effect. The person is placed in the centre of the image which attracts the audience’s attention. The clothing worn is a cape with a hood to cover the face to create a mysterious effect. The phrase used on my poster 'If you go down to the woods today, you will surely be in for a big surprise...' creates a sense of mystery. The words 'woods' and 'surprise' shows that something bad is going to occur in the woods like a killing.

My magazine front cover is similar to 'Empire' which is a film magazine which reviews mainstream films and art films. I have used red, black and white colours which connotates danger, death and blood. The main image follows the conventions of a horror film because the face of the main character (The Outsider) is edited to a scratched effect and the nails and tape across the mouth shows pain and horror.

Have you subverted any conventions?
My media product does not subvert any conventions because it follows the generic conventions of a horror film. However, my media product is a hybrid genre which is both horror and sci-fi. This is because genre is always changing and to appeal to audiences in this modern time films usually consist of hybrid genres. Also, the audiences expectations need to be fulfilled for example in this case in a horror film the audience expect death, gory frightening scenes and a scary storyline.

What kind of media producer would produce your kind of media text?
Haxan Films Production Company and Lions Gate Entertainment would produce our media text because they produce horror films which consist of similar conventions to other horror films.
